I've found a key to long belt life is to monitor the teeth on the sprockets. Over time they will wear and get sharp which will drastically shorten the life of a belt.

Had a 92 Ultra and it had 130,000 miles on the original belt when I sold it.

And Belts don't have to be lubed all the time like a chain. Then, you get chain lube all over the rear wheel. What a mess. I love my belt too.

What about the narrow belts like on the bikes with the 200 rear tire? It's 7/8" wide while the other is 1 1/2" or close. Reliability the same?

I know belts are wonderful...................I've been on HDF since 06 and can't recall seing any threads Titled "I broke my chain today" but i can remember a handful that read......I broke my belt today.......a small pebble between a pully and belt can shred a belt..........That's one less thing i have to worry about with a chain............I'll do all the matainance, To me it's worth it

I have no gripes with the belt drive system, and I have broken a belt already, but it was completely my fault, I was trying to show off, spun the tire, cought some air with the rear tire, it bounced several times and away with the belt.

A belt's gotta beat all that grease flying around messin up the rear wheel and fender.

Gotta spray a chain with lube every time you ride and even the fling free stuff don't do what it says on the tin - belt or shaft drive any time!

At 30,000 miles per year I went ahead and changed my belt at 82,500 just as a precaution but in fact it was just fine and showed no signs of wear or fatigue. I pay no attention to the belt at all really, it's a wonderful thing. It's easily a 100,000 mile item in reality.
