Default Cooling off that hot bike. XIED worked for me

I want to start this by dislaiming that i am no techie. this is from an average riders point of view

as many of you know the epa has forced harley to tune the bikes on the lean side which is the reason for the "heat issues".

i didnt feel like buying a $300 Power commander, race tuner or vance and hines fuel pack to enrichen the fuel mixture

so i tried those XIED things that have been talked about here quite a bit.

the verdict is pretty simple. basically the xied does what its supposed to do. no more, no less. it enrichens the fuel mixture.

so whats that translate into for my bike? i have an 08 heritage and the bike is noticably cooler, runs smoother, has a little more more power and doesnt lug as much (meaning i can switch gears earlier)

for my .02 opinion they are well worth the $100. i had a local shop install them (for $30) because i didnt know how (though i hear its not rocket science)

the xied isnt anything magical other than a richer fuel mixture, but that lean hot bike is annoying. i am amazed at how a little richer fuel mixture makes such a difference.

dont get me wrong... you are still sitting on 1600 cc of engine and the engine will always be "warm", but its not hot anymore (i live in florida, hot to us is a relative term).

this has been my little statement for those who are thinking of xied. it took me a long time to decide on them but i have had a trouble free experience (no error codes, no bike "quirks", etc)

basically, they did what they advertised. i could get the same effect from a much more expensive power commander or race tuner, and maybe one day i will have the bike dyno'd and dialed in. for now, i spent $100 and got more than my moneys worth.

(no i dont work for the company, and no i have no interest in you buying xied. i just thought i would shoot some info to those who had the same "heat problems" that i had that annoyed the hell out of me.

For the most part I've got to agree with Aardvak. I've been running the XiEDs for the past 3500+ miles and they do give you a bit more pep in the low and midrange RPM. They make the exhaust note a bit more throaty, You can go a bit slower in each gear without lugging... and the roll on in 6th is noticibly better. As for the heat, at least for me, it may have dropped a bit but it's not a drastic drop. Most of us have had error codes but you've got to go looking for them. They're historic codes, not the kind that pop up. MoCo even says that they are of no concern. These are the same findings that most of us that installed XiEDs have experienced. I say most of us because there are a few users that claim to have found little or no difference when using them.

If you're interested in the "full" story go to this thread and be prepared to do some serious reading, some funny, some flame, some really way out there techy but all interesting. There's contributions by an EPA guy and even a few by the designer of the product and NO he's NOT trying to push his product. It's probably close to, if not the longest thread ever on this board. As of this evening it's 2,933 posts long.

The XiEDs are beyond any doubt the best $100 investment I've made in my bike and in my opinion are perfect for those who don't want or can't afford the higher priced alternatives.

oh. i dont know how to "look up codes". but then i am not a tech guy. if my bike runs well, runs smooth and can do a few hundred miles while i goof off all over florida with no problems, then i am happy.

i guess i feel like "if the code doesnt "pop up"" and everything runs smooth, then i am a happy piggie.

i agree that the temp doesnt drop to "luke warm bathwater", but then again, its a bike. i didnt expect it to feel like an air conditioned car lol. the seering heat is definately gone.

one day i will get a real race tuner and dyno and really do it all the right way.

Aardvark,

You say that you are not a techie, then you say there are not error code. I assume you mean that the Check engine lite is not on. I think if you check for error codes, you will see that your bike has thrown the 151/131 codes. But then, maybe not....

pretty much. i assumed that some code would show up on the odometer. i dont know where else the "code would pop up"

so i guess, yes there "could be codes" but out of sight, out of mind. as long as my heritage bee bops down the highway smoothly and trouble free lol

Aardvark,

Here's a link to the really simple procedure to check for any codes that have been thrown along with an explanation of each code.

As said, if error codes were present, they are not a nuisance. For me, I enjoy riding the bike for the first time after installing mine. Ten minutes & $100, what can bring more pleasure......... WAIT - don't answer that!

And then there are the others who say the xieds did nothing for their heat problems. With no empirical studies to rely on seems those interested must pay a $100+ "testing" fee.

Having said that I believe the ieds I have on my Heritage have improved the performance of my bike. No noticible change in the heat as indicated by the oil temp gauge.
