I'm curious as to how that will be handled here in Florida. As you point out if you've got a vertical mount bracket then the plates usually pretty easy to read. But I think one of the reasons the law got passed here in Florida is that Sportbike riders are turning their plates vertical and then pushing them up under the fender which does make it hard to read the plate.

I see that here as well...or sporty riders just leaving it horizontal but pushing it way up under the fender...seems a lot of stuff that should be directed at them gets taken out on motorcycle community as a whole.

To all the riders that have vertical plates, why don't you get together and call your states main DMV office and ask them if they would be willing to make vertical plates as a option just turn the letters so they can be read top to bottom. How hard is that? Our state makes plates for every damn college, lighthouse, ducks, kids and anything you want for a fee. I am sure if you wanted to add a $20 fee for the first plate to get the letters turned they would listen. How about starting a thread for each state and collect names to submit to the states DMV ? Just a thought.

You could argue it in court, and maybe even win, but I know some guys who write the tickets. The state law reads:

"...In all cases such number plates shall be securely fastened in an upright position to the motor vehicle..."

You could argue that it's still "upright", but you'd probably lose. I think most judges would agree that upright doesn't mean sideways. That said, I see them all the time!

Well,

What PPbart said I guess, why do you want to know? Are you moving to another state....if it's legal in your state and you go to another state it's reciprocity....unless it's something really blatant I guess....some states don't even have state inspection and some do.....doesn't mean you have to get an inspection sticker just to drive through another state????

Mine's mounted vertically. The only thing I've found in MI law is that it has to be visible from 50' behind the vehicle. Does anyone from MI have any other info?

I'm curious, because I'm military...and I like to know where I'm going to catch hell from the local PD...and I figured it might inform some other forumites as well....it already seems to have done the latter.
