the term may have been coined to describe protesting coal miners but its used to describe anyone that cultured and highly intelligent northerners perceive as being beneath them ie. trailer trash, rural folk that spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, etc. in the vernacular today

I just seen that show on hillbillies yesterday, pretty interesting. I'm from NY so I guess that makes me a yankee, not capitalized. Let me tell you, there are plenty of "rednecks" up here. Plenty of trailers, farmers, loggers, and every other concievable sort. I used to have a trailer, so I guess I'm a white trash yankee. Speakin of whitetrash, I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in.
