Can't imagine doing any serious riding (over 50) on a 250 but it's probably a great around town or learner bike. It's what the wife and I both learned on in the MSF course and actually I wish we had the luxury of being able to tool around on one awhile before we climbed onboard HD softails as our first bikes.

Don't sweat it! I had 7-bikes before I got my 1st H-D. Five Yamahas and 2 Hondas not including the Briggs and Stratton. Ya gotta start somewhere but the important thing to remember is where you want to end up! Doesn't matter where you start but keep your eyes on where you want go. You'll learn a lot on the way to where you want to be!

My wife has a vstar 650 it isn't all that powerful and weighs next to nothing. I would start on that. The 250 cc cruisers are terrible. If you have hills you are probably be doing 45 mph tops at the weight you are carrying.
