ATTN Admin I have info on email problems with Vbulliten V3
#13
Sorry, my explanation may have not been too clear, but I know what works and what doesn't.
Mr Baker, if it's something wrong on the receiving end, then
why are there several other forums that have the SAME EXACT problem, ONLY after they upgraded to VBull V3?
Sounds like a Bulliten bug to me, and if you would read about
it on the web, many other sites are having the same issue.
Now there are other posts about the same topic.
I went through this same scenario last year at another forum.
Thanks for your input though.
Peace

for the software, but I think I'm getting close to the problem.
I will continue to research this issue, to see if I can find more information on this problem.
cHarley has a great workaround for this, thanks for posting that, I was beginning to wonder if I am the only one here...

You're welcome.
Since I don't have access to the Vbulletin end of the connection, I can only guess at the cause of the problem, but I suspect that it may have something to do with the fact that SMTP/POP mail uses different ports than web based email does.

The problem may be in how Admin setup the email file in PHP.ini on the server.
Vbull defaults to PHP mail handling, but if that doesn't work, then try SMTP mail instead,
see below
From the Vbulletin site
"By default vB uses PHP's mail() function for all its email and uses the SMTP server specified in php.ini. If PHP and the mail server are configured correctly then email will work. You can view the details here: http://us3.php.net/mail/
To troubleshoot any email problems you will need to view the mail logs on the server to see what happened to those emails that don't work. Once vB sends it to PHP it's in the hands of the server. If you are on a shared server you may need to ask your host to look through the logs for you.
Many large service providers such as Verizon, AOL and MSN are implementing aggressive filtering. In many cases, the customers of these providers can place the email address you use for notification in their contact list and then your emails will be allowed through. If this doesn't work, you should contact the provider in question and ask to be placed on their whitelist. Some providers will charge a listing fee for this.
In addition, AOL (and possibly others) will not accept emails from domains that do not have reverse DNS setup. It's possible these emails are being placed into a spam folder or are being filtered.
The problem could also be caused by aggressive spam filters on the user's machine. In these cases their anti-spam software should be configured to allow emails from your domain name. Refer them to the documentation for the software they are using.
If all else fails you can switch to the SMTP mail option to see if this works better for you. These settings are here:
Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Email Options -> SMTP Email -> Yes
Then fill out the appropriate SMTP settings for your account and server.
I still think the last post on this link may be the answer, or real close to it, but then
what do I know??

Look at the topic on the above link/post "strange vbulletin email problem - not sending emails anymore since upgraded to 3.0.0"
If that isn't on point, then I don't know what is....
I'll keep looking though, for those who are still in doubt

it will have the delivery notification failures in the email logs.
It's not like it sends them out, and doesn't care if they got there or not.

Sorry, I'm no email expert, but I do know this is a problem on other
sites that run Vbulliten V3 or higher, the notifications get messed up in the upgrade.
When I changed my email address from outlook Pop3, to a web based email, then I got my messages, when before I wasn't.
That's the point I was trying to make in my round about way I guess.
If your gettings your messages on outlook, then maybe this is not the problem, but it seems like it fixed my problem, and it is a know issue on other sites

Thanks
Thanks for the fix info. Only problem is it doesn't apply to getting/resetting new passwords, as one can't login in in the first place to make the changes to the profile in HDF.
