Just one chick's experience...

I can't tell you the number of people who said "I'm so glad you didn't get a Sporty" when I bought my first bike (a Deluxe). I had several skilled riding buddies who shared their thoughts that new riders buy the Sportster because it's the cheapest Harley, but that it's not a beginner bike. After riding one, I would agree - I found the Sporty much more top-heavy than my Deluxe, and I feel a lot more stable on a wider front tire.
