helmet law ? in NC
fixing to go to north carolina to the outter banks , was wondering if anyone there could tell me how bad the cops are on novelty helmets there ? thanks for any info.

I have read in the news that cops are going to start cracking down and looking to see if helmets are DOT or not. I don't live there so I am not an authority, but that's what I read.

They are illegal but I have been riding for several years with one and haven't been stopped yet. With that said, I do speed a little and haven't been stopped yet either.
Make sure you go through the Blue Ridge Parkway if you can. Not sure where you are coming from but this ride is outstanding.
Let me know when you are coming down, I live in Statesville, NC and if you are close, I will take you to the Parkway.

While some states (TN for sure) specifically state that you have to wear a DOT approved helmet, NC law just says you have to wear a helmet. It does not specify a DOT approved helmet. I know cases where inexperienced officers in NC have written tickets for non-DOT approved helmets but, in each case it was thrown out in court.

I flew past a Wake County Sherrif on a backroad the other day while wearing a novelty... He didn't even blink at me.
There is a bar in Smithfield called the last resort... I think anything with the word DOT on it would be engulfed in flames hitting the parking lot of that place... If the cops wanted to they could just sit there and wait for the bikers to leave and ticket... Never had a problem. Cop sat there and watched me strap my skid lid on my head leaving there one day.
All depends on what part of the state you are in I am sure. I have not had problems from Wake all the way down to Brunswick.
