Dad and daughter trip
My ten year old almost 11 said to me last night Dad lets ride to Arizona. Now we live 30 miles south of Chicago. She has been riding with me on short rides since \\;I got the used bike 3 months ago. I have been riding for 20 years and always dreamed of the \\; day that i could take a trip with one of my kids. I just never expected my youngest to be the biker of the 3. I hate to break her spirit but 1800 miles is a cruise. Does anyone think \\;I should consider this for even a second. Could this be safe? No i'm \\;not a bad parent just wondering if it could be done. If my dad and i could of done this 30 years ago it might have been a great memory. \\; \\;

My kids ride as well and love it. Hard to keep them off the bike.
 \\;
I'd take her on an overnight trip without too many miles first to see how she handles it. Then go from there. For all their energy, kids can fatigue easily.

RE: Dad and daughter trip
Last week, my 11 yr old went on her first long ride. \\; Was about 280 miles or so round trip, with 5 stops. \\; \\; Now, she was a little tired to begin with, as she had to get up a bit early (it IS summer vacation, and she has been sleeping in), but I noticed that after an hour or so, she would start nodding off. \\; \\;
 \\;
Me Personally, I wouldn't try to go further than 400 miles a day. \\; Also, I have an Ultra, so when she DID doze off, which she did in fact do a couple of times, she had something to lean against.

Just goes to show that bikers are born ... not made. \\; Take her on a day ride to Springfield or to Indy to see how she does. \\; If she can handle a day ride (200 to 250 miles in a day) then she can do the multi-day Arizona ride. \\; Just make sure to pay attention to her back there so she doesn't doze off on you and slip from the seat. \\; Get a helmet mic system to make the ride easier for her.  \\;

RE: Dad and daughter trip
When my youngest was 13 we did a 3 day road trip. \\; We planned the trip together and rode to some historic sites that she had learned about in school and camped a couple of nights in state parks. \\; She loved it. \\; We were never more than a half day from home if things had started to go sour, though. \\;  \\;  \\; \\;

RE: Dad and daughter trip
Thanks for all the great input. We are going to plan the first 200 mile trip this week and go from there. Spending time with my daughters has always been fun. The funny thing about this post is i personally wanted to do a road trip and had been thinking about it, when my daughter mentioned it i couldn't beleive it. My ex is not liking the idea at all. So now we would have to talk mom into the idea. I do understand moms concerns as she was a passenger for many years. She did agree to let me and Bailey start with a 200 mile trip and see how it goes YAHOO. Will keep the post updated with pics if i can figure out how to adjust my digital camera to take the right format pic. Maybe I can start a local weekend daddy/daughter riders club LOL.

Do the short trips. Get her started on her own bike (dirt bike) when she gets a little older (18-20) if she still likes riding you could take your trip to Arizona. You on your bike and her on her own.
