Do loud pipes save more lives than helmets would or could?
That argument always makes me laugh as a lot of the guys with loud pipes wear tee shirts & beanies, but argue that the pipes are needed for safety. Again, I do not advocate helmet laws - I just see humor in the above comment.

Not that I don't wear a helmet but as far as safety equipment is concerned, I value something that would prevent getting run over FAR more than something designed to protect me in the event of a crash. Personally, I'd rather have loud pipes not need the friggin helmet! If loud pipes save your bacon just once in your lifetime, whether you even know it or not, isn't that enough???

That's a good one, t-shirt and beanie with loud pipes for safety. Since most accidents that are caused by others are the infamous left turning cager, and sound waves travel behind you the only thing loud pipes do is prevent people from making left turns once your past. I think on the freeway loud pipes might make someone aware of your presence before they lane-change, so in that instance they might help. Of course a little situational awareness and not riding next to cars in the first place would accomplish the same thing.......
I'll take my chances with quieter pipes, riding sober and knowing WTF I'm doing if you don't mind, and a full face helmet and decent riding gear in case that's not enough. so far in 30 years of street riding and over half a million miles It's worked pretty well.

I am considerate of others when riding. I like the exhaust tone but not open non-baffled pipes. I think they are too loud when the rider is on the throttle.
