Default RE: LOW mileage oil change necessary?

I know that you already decided to change the oil .To put it in prospective. I have a high hp/ high compression/ high dollar engine. It is a screamer. Runs great. Requires very little work or tuning. I was talking to mechanic buddy. I wrench for fun/ he wrenches for a living. I told him that the engine was a little rich and I was having trouble getting it tuned. I kept bouncing between a little rich/a little lean. That the engine was a little rich in my opinion now but it screams and just runs so sweet. Told him that I was having to change plugs out a little more often than what was normal in my opinion but the engine was a screamer. I was taught lean was mean but rich last forever. He asked me which was more expensive plugs or engines? Plugs are cheap. Oil is cheap. Engines and mechanics are expensive. JMO

My wife has a 2008 Sporty 883.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
She bought it last August (10 months ago).
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
The bike has only been ridden 300 miles.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
NOW....I don't NEED any "Get out and ride" comments because we already KNOW that, but things beyond our control have gotten in the way.
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
(She's an ER Specialist and Medical Director and works nights and weekends)

&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;Question is:&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\; Shouldn't I go ahead and change the oil since it's been almost a year on the original fliuids?&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;Obviously it isn't going to hurt anything to do it, but should we wait until the Fall?&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\;\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\;We've got time (finally) to ride and have 500 miles or so of trips planned in the next 2 months.
Opinions greatly appreciated.

I would give it a good long ride then change it just when it becomes cool enough to touch.

My opinion is that all things with engines should be used often and for more than an hour at a time. This will actually lessen mechanical problems.

Not to start an argument or high jack this thread but I am old school, hard headed and just set in my ways. I still change at 2500 miles as I have done forever in the bikes. At 3000 miles in the vehicles. Some would argue that its overkill but they don't buy my bikes, vehicles, or my oil. Its year around riding here and hot in the summer. I consider it extreme so I change oil like I always have. Oil is cheap. Engines are hot. I love synthetic oil. I run heavy synthetics in the transmission. Old school. Hardhead. With attitude.

Harmful acids build up in oil when an engine is used,due to the oil absorbing acids from the exhaust gas.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; When and engine is not run long enough to get to normal engine temperature for a reasonable period of time the condensation that may build up in your engine due to the engine cooling, is also bad for any engine.&nbsp\\;Change the oil, it can only benefit the life of your engine to do so.

Those acids can really do a number on your bearing too.

&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;I also agree with the oil change due to the time&nbsp\\;side of it. Realizing the oil sits up in an oil tank and is not a wet sump, it still hasn't burned out any impurities (fuel blowby or condensation), oil is cheap compared to an engine. I still believe in 3 months or 3,000 miles.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;

I would change it cost all of $40.00 bucks tops using Hd syn and Filter. That's less then buying 10gals of gas.

Glad that you decided to change the oil. Hope you are changing the filter also. It makes no sense to me to change oil and leave a filter full of dirty oil in place.

Plus one. That would be like taking a shower and putting your dirty clothes back on.

Yes. Don't go more than 12 months on oil.&nbsp\\; Acids from combustion build up.&nbsp\\;
