I'm not sure just how far, but I would guess about three hours. KY-109 goes right through it and is a nice ride. If you take I-24 north then the first exit in Kentucky is KY-115. If you go north (right) \\;on that a mile and a quarter you come to KY-756 to the left. Take KY-756 about a half mile and KY-109 splits off on the right. Take that all the way through Kentucky and it will take you \\;to Sturgis as well as to the bridge at Shawneetown.

I cross at Shawneetown going to Illinois and coming back I stop off at my wife's apartment in Nashville. I haven't started learning the roads north of Nashville yet and since she's downtown I-24 is the easiest. You could also take US-41 up to Madisonville then US-41A to Providence and pick up KY-109. Or if you prefer the interstate take it to Eddyville, US-641 to Marion then US-60 will take you into Sturgis. Personally, both have a little too much traffic for me.
