Mens zippers for the European market are on the left as well. I have a British SAS Combat Smock dated 1968 that's zippered on the left and I'm pretty sure there's no female SAS Commando's (yet).
Yeah, womens jacket's, coats, etc. always buttoned on the opposite side. not sure why.
The way I heard it years ago, was that men's clothing was buttoned the way it was, so a gentleman could draw his sword with his right hand while unbuttoning his coat with the left hand.
Women, on the other hand, if they had buttoned garments were usually wealthy, and had someone to help them "dress". Their buttons were opposite handed to make it easier for the maid to dress them (and for a gentleman to undress them).
