RE: Do you have it backwards too?
I just had a great idea. Let's all change our oil and send the used oil to another forum member. That way the oil just keeps getting better and better for our bikes.

I never heard this one before but I will say this....oil does not deteriorate. It becomes dirty and needs filtered, amounts become less because of leaks and burning off. But it does not deteriorate. You could actually never change your oil again, as long as you maintained a new filter and kept it full. One example is the engine rooms of U.S. ships, the oil is never changed unless there is some part failure and the oil becomes contaminated. They change filters and add as needed and those engines have millions of hours on them.

I worked in the engine room of a ship, and we did change the oil...and our tubines did not have a "filter". \\; We had large heated setteling tanks to allow the old oil to sit so the impurities would settle to the bottom of the tanks. \\; \\; Also, the oil in use was required to be run through a centrifigal purifier for a minimum of 8 hours daily or the engine had to be shut down. \\; But the oil was changed on a scheduled basis.

I have read where changing oil more often then necessary, on cars, \\;does contribute to excessive engine wear and is also a waste of time and money.
The theory being that the first start up after the oil change will add wear to the engine, due to insufficient oil on the critical wear surfaces. That is why it is important to fill the oil filter, before installing it. This allows oil to get to the engine a few seconds faster.

I had a 69 nova with a straight 6, and put over 50,000 on it and never changed the oil. I also knew the \\;previous 2 owners, and they never changed the oil, and the 1st guy had it since 1980. The car ran \\;perfect, and had over 200,000 when I sold it.
