RE: 06 Dyna vs Cow
I can understand hitting a deer, they come running out of the woods, and deer are fast! Hitting a cow that 'ran' from open pasture???? come on, I'll bet the rider wasn't paying too much attention. 250 miles on a brand new bike.

The heifer high tailed it.
Fortunately the bike was almost stopped when the collision occurred. The rider fell to the right and injured his right shoulder and his right leg was under the bike. A knee sprain, road rash on the leg and a wrenched shoulder were the visible extent of injuries.
He passed out once we were on scene, but still refused to be transported by ambulance. Kidnapping is illegal in California so we could not force him to go in the ambulance.

Coming up canyon, a cow suddenly ran in front of him and he couldn't avoid the collision.

Me thinks he was keeping his eyes out for magic mushrooms in that Cow Pasture...

Here in Illinois we have cows but deer are the real culprit. We lose lots of squads each year to Deer vs. Squads and there are a ton of car vs. deer accidents. Usually when it's Deer vs. Motorcycle the deer wins. We'll actually there is no winner because the deer usually bites the dust too.

When we respond to a call after dark, we do not respond code 3 with lights and siren. The lights and noise spook the cows. Headlights are poor at best and the flashing strobes are hard to see through. We drive 35 MPH and NO lights. Keeps us safer.
The worst ones to drive by are the calves. They suddenly realize they are on the opposite side of the road from mama and head straight for her. So what if there is something in between.
Ride defensively when in cow country. Fences mean little. Cows will go over, under, around and through them. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
