I had my dealer put on 14" apes with internal wiring and braide cables. THey only charged me 4 hours labor at 80 bucks an hour. I say tell them 7 hours is a little much. Again, depending on the model.
You done good. Do you think you might've gotten a break since I'm assuming you bought the cables from them?
I take that back. Looked at my invoice and they charged me 5 hours, which is still pretty damn for what some are some are being quoted. I did go through them for everything, so they probably shot me a deal, which is a surprise!

One of the local stealers originally quoted me 4.6 hours at $75/hour to install the apes I have waiting to go on the bike. When I mentioned that I wanted internal wiring, they bumped that figure by 3 hours. Thing is, my bars are already dimpled and drilled, so all they have to do is run the wires inside the bars, rather than route them outside. This doesn't seem like the kind of thing that will take 3 hours. Am I missing something?
I'd be happy to get that quote. I was quoted 1K bucks from the dealer and an Indy shop here in Phoenix. Could go to some 9's and then I wouldn't need new cables and they could do that for 450 instead of a grand....tough decision...now I am just gonna wait til fall anyway since I don't ride much in the summer here in Phoenix...

I can change out bars internal or external in less then 2 hours. This is not as hard as dealers make it out to be. The longest part of the entire process is bleeding the front brake/s.

I can't BELIEVE the quotes and prices from the dealers in this thread for a simple handlebar change. This is a very basic and simple job that just about anyone with a half a brain and some basic tools can do in the garage. That goes for most things on a motorcycle. If you take your time and do some research you'll find you can do just about anything yourself.[sm=smiley20.gif]

If you do it yourself. The biggest tip that all of us could probable agree on is "Stick a quarter in the gap between the front brake handle and the front brake housing before you take the handlebar controlls off the handlebar.

Nothing wrong with that...........even if it took all weekend.Somehow when you do it yourself it doesn't matter how long it takes, especially since you're not paying for it.You save alot of money, learn something, and get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, not to mention the confidence to take on the next project

If its remotely feasible do it yourself, it requires basic tools and knowledge.Plus going by personal experience it probably won,t be the last time you change a pair of bars so you may as well start saving the bux now. There is a mountain of info on this forum, on this subject, one tip and its the usual one, give yourself plenty of time so as not to put pressure on yourself.
Best wishes.

Went to the dealer on friday and with the help of one of the parts guys decided that a set of bars from a Dyna Low would do the trick on my 1200. Wanted to be "higher and tighter" without the mini ape look. Had the parts in stock. All cables and wiring long enough and gently reshaped the front brake line so that it fits but need a longer anti-rattle clip. They said that if you want to change the front line you could use one of the new black flex lines on some of the 08's. Total time(changed the grips too)2hours25minutes. I'm not a Harley mechanic and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express either.
