First day I had my SG, my pants got caught on the heel shifter. Almost got ugly, stopped right then and there, took it off and tossed it into the woods.

The 'heel shifter' is the first thing I removed when I got my FatBoy, but I saved it as a 'spare' for future use.
On the FatBoy the heel shifter lever is the exact same lever that is used for the toe shifter, and it's always good to have a spare shifter lever.

You know, those pants probably would have been just fine when you weren't riding your bike. I wouldn't have thrown them away.
Dammit,I just snorted beer out my nose, laughing in mid drink. That's funny as hell.
Good Luck

One more reason to wear chaps
I always wondered about those wallets with a chain. I assume the idea is that if it works it's way out of your pocket while riding the chain is suppose to catch it, but it always seemed the chain is just the right length for it to catch in the wheel if that actually happened.

Hmm... I managed to learn that lesson in middle school with a pair of athletic shoes and 10 speed bike. Considering how it worked out for me back then, I'm glad to hear your buddy was able to resolve the issue safely.

My laces are long enough that I take an extra wrap around the ankle before I tie them. Leaves zero dangling to get tangled up.
