Do I need a windshield?

You don't need one, but they are nice to have. I suggest a removable one. Check out Memphis shades, they make some nice ones at reasonable prices that fit very well.

I put 16k on my first bike without a windshield, didn't know what I was missing. I have a detachable now on the Road King, and it's great. I'd highly recommend at least getting a detachable so you have the option if you want to use it.

another thing I didn't see mentioned yet . On the highway , you'll really appreciate how much less wind noise you have in your ears !

I never had a windshield until this bike. I took it off once, never again. Riding with one really spoils you.

A Shield is a good thingfor:
[ol][*]Long trips (you won't be worn out after a 600 Mile day)[*]Nasty weather[*]Temps < 50 Deg F.[*]Speed above 60 MPH (See item 1)[/ol]
They have a place and time.
I like the looks of bike without one though.
The best advice I can give you is: Adjust your gear appropriate for the trip.
+1 on detachable model.

I was one who never used one until I bought this last bike andgota detachable and it is great, I cant believe I suffered so many years riding withoutone. And as far as those guysgowho say they are whimpshields etc.they also sayit is just like driving a car, well I beg to differ, it is not the same as a car by a longshot, I still get wet when it rains, and I am still on two wheels, And my Harley always looks cooler than a car no matter what!!

Asked an old biker and he said "Memphis Fats." It's easy and quick to remove (mounting bracket looks cool and stays in place). I've taken it off once or twice for a hot, short summer ride around the hood. As for looks, I like to cover up the XL with shield, bar bags, saddle bags, and tour bag. When you ride the best looking bike around, it's better to keep it toned down--there's no reason to temp the thieves.
