Newbie Question - Tell me about throwever saddlebags...
How do these work? I can figure out on my own that you can install them under or over the passenger area of the seat and adjust them to the correct height. But how do they connect on the sides? Are you required to have those siderail things or can you tie them down to the struts? Alot of bags seem to maintain their shape, which makes me think you don't need to siderail things.
How do you guys do the throwover bags?

Also, if I ever did get a set of throwover bags, I'm not moving the turn signals. I'd just have to get smaller bags that I assume would work with the signals installed as they are now (through the struts.)

The siderails may be needed to keep the bags from rubbing and do provide a place to tie the bags down so they don't flap when empty. It depends on the bike and the bags.
If you are only going to put the bags on occasionally then you may be able to just hang them over the seat.
Check the fit with the bags fully loaded.
If they are touching any paint they will rub it off.

When I got my bike I had the Saddlebag Support kit mounted on the bike. My saddle bags have a piece of leather rivited to the back of the back, the chrome support bar slips between the piece of leather and the back of the bag. The bags don't rub on anything or move around.

I had some of these on my softail standard....Texas Saddles throwover saddlebags...Got them from J&P cycles for around $200..Held their shape real well and were good quality... used HD saddlebag struts to tie off the bags and secured the yolk to the top of the rear fender by the rear seat bolt, thiskept thebags from shifting...Elmer gluedterrycloth on the underside of the yolk to protect the paint

I have throwover bags (small) that I attached to the turn signal posts with leather shoestrings. I bought some leather adhesive spray at a Hobby Lobby and cut out two large pieces of sheepskin that I had laying around. Attached the sheepskin to the back of the bags so they would not mar my chrome fender struts. So far, they work good.See attached picture.

I had throwover bagsfor awhile on my Sportster. They went under the seat and tied down there to prevent shifting. They were nice for awhile, but then they started to lose their shape. Because the shock towers are there, they didn't rub against anythin and I didn't tie them down. My wife bought them for me so I kinda had to use them.

I use throw over bags because I don't want bags on unless I'm going someplace
I just throw them over the seat if wife goes a piece of sheep skin or towel over the strap.
I do have the bag supports just to tye the bag to to keep it from flapping in hard wind. work out well for me..

Good info here, i was wondering about the same thing. What would you guys think of these, now i know there not $600 + but they say that you dont need the support brackets? You guys think these would work as part time long haul bags without support brackets?
