Athens-Clarke County police are looking for a driver who allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Old Commerce and Commerce roads Thursday afternoon, injuring a motorcyclist, and fled the scene.
The motorcyclist, 31-year-old Jonathan Rufus Benton of Hull, is in serious but stable condition at Athens Regional Medical Center, according to hospital spokesman Mike Pilcher.
According to a witness, Benton was driving north on Commerce Road at about 4:30 p.m. when he had to swerve to avoid hitting an sport utility vehicle similar to a Chevrolet Trailblazer heading east on Old Commerce Road.
Benton was ejected from his 1996 Harley Davidson Road Master and suffered several broken ribs, a brain injury, a collapsed lung and extensive road rash, according to his sister and a police officer's report.
"They're real optimistic about his recovery," said Benton's sister Shannon Hill. "But it will take some time."
Benton has driven motorcycles for most his adult life, she said.
"I just want to get out there that (police) are looking for this person," Hill said. "He's got children and he's married. He's got people he was to work to support, but he won't be able to that for a while."
Benton, who has three children, does not have health insurance, she added.
Police are offering a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to the SUV's driver. Information can be called in to Sgt. Frank Smith or Brenan Baird (706) 208-1718 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 706-613-3342.

RE: CAGERS!!!! Local biker hit-and-run
I was ran off the road by a tractor trailer and he never used his turn signals or tapped his brake lights to even acknowledge that he saw me before putting me in a ditch at 55 mph on my 05 EGC that I had just bought 3 weeks prior!!!!!!!!!!!! I was knocked out for awhile and walked away with 6 broke ribs. No helmet, no jacket, just my uniform. Bike took $11,820 damage!!!!!!!!!!

As much as this sucks, we should be glad they are calling it a hit-and-run even though the guy was able to swerve and miss. A lot of times if a car cuts you off and you dump it trying to avoid the impact they call it a single vehicle accident.
