And how do I tell someone that people who really ride call 'em that without coming off as elitist or pretentious?

Don't know why they look at you funny. That term has been used for many years. I can remember using it, and hearing it used,in the early sixties. I still call them scooters or scoots.

Who care's what ya call'em. To the unimformed "scooter" bring's up images like Vespa,or TOAD in American Graffiti. Take off the "er" and just call it your "scoot",or "ride",or "machine" and let 'em figure it out. "If you have to explain it,they probably would'nt undersatnd" RIDE SAFE.

They actually look at me funnier when I say scooter in reference to my bike. I guess I've never noticed the constant funny looks[8D]
Kinda like working at a landfill, you know. You get used to the smell.

You're right. The uninformed (ignorant) think of Vespa when I say scooter in reference to a bike. The thing that gets me is that these are the people who put on their best weekend riding uniforms, ride 20 miles to have breakfast, 20 miles to the local dealer, 10 miles to lunch, 30 miles to another dealer, and then cap off their day with dinner or another dealer and then they have the nerve to look down on me for calling my bike a scooter.
I have no problem with that type of rider. I'll have a beer and talk story (Hawaiian slang for shoot the chit) with them anytime. That is until I'm tired of sitting in one place and decide it's time to scooterpoot on down the road.
I guess the best way to enlighten that type of person is to just live by example. Show them that I'm not going to judge them because they'll buy a bike and sell it on eBay two years later with <1000 miles on it and hopefully, they'll learn not to judge others because they're different.
