You're right. The uninformed (ignorant) think of Vespa when I say scooter in reference to a bike. The thing that gets me is that these are the people who put on their best weekend riding uniforms, ride 20 miles to have breakfast, 20 miles to the local dealer, 10 miles to lunch, 30 miles to another dealer, and then cap off their day with dinner or another dealer and then they have the nerve to look down on me for calling my bike a scooter.
I have no problem with that type of rider. I'll have a beer and talk story (Hawaiian slang for shoot the chit) with them anytime. That is until I'm tired of sitting in one place and decide it's time to scooterpoot on down the road.
I guess the best way to enlighten that type of person is to just live by example. Show them that I'm not going to judge them because they'll buy a bike and sell it on eBay two years later with <1000 miles on it and hopefully, they'll learn not to judge others because they're different.

Here in Southern New England, I don't hear the word scooter used too much. 
Maybe it's a regeional thing kinda like a Grinder, Sub, Hogie or a Poor Boy.

who cares what anyone thinks? are you riding for attention? call it whatever you want. that's the way I see it. tell them its a nickname and move on. funny looks are from people without open minds. it happens all the time. **** 'em!

I never refer to my Harley as a scooter. It is always my Harley, everyone understands what I am saying.
