You can put together a basic set of tools for well under $100.00. Cruz tools has a couple of kits in rolls that pack right in a reasonable size, or you can make your own. Would recommend that you get good quality tools, I'd use Craftsman in case one breaks, cheap imported crap won't stand up and are liable to break at the exact time you need them. (Funny how that happens). Lots of good suggestions here, basic tools are essential packing when going on a long trip, some tools are always better than none at all.

Basic tools will help, but in addition you will be surprised how wires ties and a small roll of duct tape will get you going.

I bought a two zipper shaving kit. One side is the excedrin, tums, bandaids, medical tape, sunblock & whatever else the wife thinks we need and tools in the other side with some sparkplugs and about two or three feet of clear plastic 1/4 inch siphon hose in with the other listed items.

With so many guys riding with their entire workbenches, I'm surprised no one has packed a the Craftsmen bike lift!

The AAA RV/Motorcycle coverage only costs 100 bucks and tows you far enough to get you to a shop or a parts store.

I do carry some tools, just not the Craftsmen catalog.

I use a tool just like the stealth tool from windzone. Got mine from J & P Cycles its called the out'backer made by cruz tools. Cost only $20 bucks and you can do just about everything with it. Also carry a leatherman, zip ties, and electrial tape.
