I have a sheepskin that I bought from a leather supply store. Cut it in half - use one part on the bike that happens to be naturally shaped to the seat contour. Use the other half on my desk chair. The back of the hide doesn't slide around on the leather seat and I keep it attached with only a leather shoe lace run under the frame at the seatand over the hide. Tie a nice bow that's hidden in the wool & hit the road.
Have ridden both in high heat and heavy rain for hours. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. Doesn't stink. Can't say enough good about it. One of the best monkey-butt prevention devices out there. $30.00 for the whole hide.

I also have the Alaska Leather pad, never thoug a peice of sheepskin, no gel, would make a difference, but it does. Nice and comfy...
I also have some gel pads and I like the AK leather pad better....quick on and off, store it in the trunk when stopped.

I have been using one for 3 years now. got it from Alaska leathers. It is very easy to keep clean. It does repel water. Taking it off/on only takes a couple of seconds. It does add some comfort but it mainly keeps you cool and that is the most comfort you will need. When do you get the numbness/burning? when you are hot. Nuf said. You can leave it in 100 degree sunlight and it will not get hot. Great product. It is a investment not a cost

Just checked out Alaskaleathers web site and I think I'm going to order one for my Ultra. I understand the cooling and heating of the sheepskin butt pad, but does it have added comfort or is it just the heating/cooling issue that y'all like so much about them? "D"
Xtreame, it does add comfort, I think, the main thing is that you can sit in that seat for a long long time before you get that butt burn. I guess that in itsself makes it comfortable.

Well a few minutes after the rain started I started smelling the gawd awfulness smell you could imagine, at first I thought it was my partner andthe more it rained the worst it smelled!!! Finally my partner got a whiff of it and asked why I smelled like a wet goat? It was then I thought about the wool watch cap and sure enough it was the culprit. I tried washing it but every time it'd get wet it'd stink, so I ended up throwing it away. I can only imagine what a sheep cover would smell like if it got wet, to be honest Bro, I don't think my stomach could handle it [sm=smiley11.gif]. I've heard a lot of good things about the sheep covers and it would be interesting to find out how it handles the wet..."D"

I just used the search tool to find talk of washing the sheepskin.

I washed mine in the tub this week, using a regular shampoo/hair conditioner. Gave it a good brushing before I got it wet to try to get the mats out as best as possible. Got it good and wet, massaged the shampoo through and rinsed the crap out of afterward. put it on a rack to dry, brushed it again and it is as good as new. I am quite thrilled at the outcome.

In regard to the smell that wool has when it is wet, yes.... it does have a particular odor. Kind of like a big old wet dog. It has nothing to do with being rotten or anything, it is just how it is. When it is dry, it goes away.

Like nearly everything I do in life, I tried the DIY (cheap) route. It works well and has served me 9 years and counting. It has been installed on 4 different bikes. People ask "Whats that on your seat"...I tell them It's "Teddy Bear Road Kill". Try one....for $5 you don't have much to lose ?

You can make your own "Sheepskin" seat cover for $4.99 from a Walmart automotive wash-mitt.

HERE is a link to the HowTo.

A pic of it on my old 01' circa 2005 when the mitt was 6 years old, the color is faded to grey. It was black (Rit dye) for the first 2 years.
