Default Houston TX Highways

Hi I am new to this forum and only have been riding about a year. I have almost 3000 miles on my bike but have a question. My husband and I are planning on attending the ROT in Austin this summer and have relatives in the Houston area that we plan to go visit before the ROT begins. My question is "How are the highways in Houston?" I am a little nervous about riding on them, have been there before and only remember that they are big. I have ridden through Sacramento CA. and did not have any problems (nonstop backups there)but because I used to live in that area I know the highways. I know I just watch out for the same things I do here, but justed wanted some feedback from those of you in that area on what to expect.

Thanks in advance

stay off of them between 6:30am and 9am, and 4pm and 7pm. be prepared for some of the rudest drivers you've ever encountered.

knowing your coming from Austin... where in Houston are you going?

We are going to Missouri City, just outside of Houston.

I'll second what aviator said to a point. I think they are the rudest drivers in Texas, but I don't know that they compare with LA.

I still hate driving there, even in a cage!

I agree with you on that one, I used to hate to drive in the LA area, Sacramento really wasn't that bad just alot of traffic 24/7. I live in Northern Nevada now and have been spoiled by the way they drive here although there are still alot of rude people here also.

Thanks

The location you are to visit is important. A lot of the worst areas can be avoided if you can take secondary and back roads. The beltways and freeways are insane on weekdays during rush hours, if you are going to somewhere in Houston proper try to come in on the weekend, not a lot better, but better. I used to ride daily in rush hour traffic which explains my sparse white hair. Let us know what your destination is and we can help you avoid needless stress.

I would suggest taking 290 to rt36 atBrenham go south on 36 to 59 at Rosenburg then 59 to Mo. City. It's a longer route but avoids most of the real crazy traffic. 59 may get a little heavy near Mo City but it is the least of all evils. I used to live in Mo City a few years ago and now live in Bellville. Have used this route often getting to the SW side. I'm sure others will have alternate routes so you will have choices.
Good Luck, ride safe, Mark

Sounds like you plan on coming to Mo City then go to Austin. Where are you coming from?
