BTW the belt beats a chain hands down.
I run a chain. If it breaks I get out my little bag w/chain breaker, spare master link and I'm back on the road in 20 min. Low tech has it's place!

I have over 67000 miles on my belt drive and it seems OK. Now that I said that,[sm=headbang.gif] I better watch out. I'll have to knock on some wood.

Wow! after reading all the post here and older threads about the cost of a belt replacement job, or the do it yourself belt install tips and all the belts that have broken here...........Belts Suck! Yes i change my chain more often than belts get changed, but it only cost 100 bucks and the sweet thing about it..............only takes me 5 minutes, and the peace of mind is priceless

I don't miss my chain or my shaft at all.

I think the belt is a perfect compromise.

Chains are cool, but around here they get dirty really quickly. They can also hurt things when they snap.

What's the difference? You should be changin' the sprockets every 2 chains and you gotta break the primary down to do that. Only extra is takin' the swingarm apart, and that's pretty easy while you have the inner primary and rear wheel off.

Lost the first belt on my Sportie around 16,000 miles.Replacing my second belt now,at 26,000 miles. My rear pulley is showing bad scoring marks on the trailing edge of the teeth. The same marks are embeded into the belt.On the belt, some of the cogs are missing and others are badly worn.I don't ride on gavel roads.
Maybe you would want to change your pulley? Maybe the problem?

Think about it...a stone...imbedding itself into a Harley belt......
going I-don't-know-how-many-RPM arond the drive srocket.
You think it is going to stay there more than ONE
revolution (not even)?

Chuck
Yes,,, a very small gravel,, or pebble,, as we call them in the south,,, can embed in a belt,, seen it first hand and dug it out for a friend,,, he kept running the belt,, didn't break. I wish I could dig another one out for him,,,, he passed away three years ago.

I converted to a chain and sprocket on my 06 fatboy with a 125ft-lb/135hp engine build. This build has broken belts and the chain conversion was recommended by the shop.
