Default can powdercoating be applied to look anodized?

i'm buying new wheels and i want the anodized look, the wheel builder recommends a candy powder coat that they say looks anodized.

what's your experience/knowledge re: this?

if ya have pics of an anodized powdercoating please post them!

also, they advised against the anodized finish due to fading but doesn't it take a long long time for that?

thx

I don't know man,...powdercoat is pretty easy to distiguish from anodized.....kind of two different worlds ain't it? Not sure you'd get the desired look.

There are many forms of powder coating.I think what he is referring to is a translucent powder like candy that allows the chrome to shine through.Do some searching on here. There are a few who have done this.

Check out this web site of a powder manufacturer. It might give you a better idea of what’s available in powder.

You will not get a powder coat to give the same look and feel as anodizing.

Anodizing [in a nut shell] is a metal stain so it doesn't add thickness to the part. That is far from the long scientific explaination of what it is but if you want that you can read up on the process more online. Powder coating, on the other hand, is a dry paint resin that is electrostatically applied to the part and cured in the oven. You get the same look and feel from powder coat as you would a good automotive paint and it will add thickness to the part. A single coat of powder on the typical motorcycle part will add anywhere from 3-8 mils, depending on the application method and type of powder used. That's usually a little thicker than a coat of automotive paint.

Powder coating is a lot more durable than liquid paint because it remains flexible. Since it's flexible it is very resilient to impact or bending so it doesn't chip or crack. Paint on the other hand is very hard so it will chip or crack under the same conditions. For what you are looking to do I would recommend powder coating over anodizing for the durability factor and gloss level options.
