Combination of both. Roll off the throttle, ease into the brakes (always use front and rear in sync) and downshift gently as the speed goes down. I've got 50,000 miles on this set of brakes and still plenty of pad left... Mostly long distance freeway commuting.

Doesn't matter if its emergency stop or regular stop you better hope your not in 4th gear setting at that light and need to hit it fast when little old lady is right on your *** and doesn't see you.

That is why by the time you come to a stop you should be in first gear this is basic motorcycle training.

and if your not coming to a complete stop then

Like many have said your gear should match your motor so if you have to let off that break and roll on that throttle you can.
