A real biker if he has to stop and i mean has to stop .....will lay her down and then pick her on up when the light changes.........

Its sounds like there's been alot of stopping out there!!!!!!!

Boff!

But I rarely downshift to first gear. Too low. Even at very slow speeds.

I do both, try to downshift as much as possible, use the brakes more for faster stops.

Both, keep the bike in the right gear for the speed.

Slow down in gear, drop one gear when speed is right, then slowly brake to stop. Do as little shifting and braking as possible. Less wear and tear on the bike.

I do both. I downshift at the bottom of the power curve, about 2000 rpm, while slowing down. I use brakes to finish up the stop normally. What I don't do is downshift without matching engine speed to vehicle speed. That scuffs the heck out of the rear tire and you get abnormal wear. I use the brakes simultaneously with emphasis on the front brakes. I use the rear brake by itself in slow manuevering, especially while turning. Easy and smooth does it.

(I learned to ride a motorcycle first, then applied these techniques to flying, and later, driving a charter bus. Kept my passengers very happy and unruffled. Drive my car the same way, smooth and easy. Much better for the machines and the folks.)

A little of both in unison.
