Default Diagnosed today with prostrate cancer

For any of you brothers that have had this experience a little reassurance would be greatly apprecitated. Went in for a regular check up and PSA was at 4. Had a biopsy done and test came back positive that I have cancer. Only one of the 12 biopsies they took showed cancer. It was rated at a Gleason 7 (whatever that means, hopefully some of you that's went through this will help me out) I know an 8,9 or 10 isn't good. 7 is borderline. I am 56. The specialist that did the biopsy and went over the results with me wants to do total removal. I am 56. He said someone my age should have the prostate removed for a total cure if, and he thinks by all indications, it is contained in only the prostrate. The side effects also scare me. If someone would to like to pm me that has come through this with positive results that would be great. I may be 56 but like of lot of us I still feel 21.

Best to you bro. My Uncle was diagnosed earlier this year. He's handling it well. He tells me that for this type of cancer survival rate is pretty good. I don't know about the sex thing though.

My prayers go out to ya Sparky. One of the most important things is to keep a positive attitude. You WILL be ok.

Man Im sorry to hear that. The better half's uncle just had surgery for it last month himself. Saw him at xmas, and while hes out and about, hes in some pain. Ive already got the lecture of when Im going in to get checked. Bob Dole went thru this as I recall, and he was given viagra for his sexual needs, but correct me if Im wrong. Its kind of the male version of breast cancer, in how it takes an emotional toll on us. Hang in there, youll miss some ride time till you heal, but I have no doubt youll be back out there burnin up the road again.

Ok, asked the woman about the Gleason score(shes a nurse), and she sent me off to google land. Heres what I found. http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...e/id-1856.html
Get in and get it done. You got a few years left of riding that RK still.

My father had it in his later 60's and it was treated with a gold bead shaped like a rice grain, inserted into the cancerous area and radiated. Don't know if that treatment is recommended for younger men, but he lived to 83 and it was not the cause of death.Your docs recommendation for total removal might be worth a second opinion.

It's something that really concerns me at the age of 62because my father had it and so did his father. Hoping mom's genes come through.

Good luck.

I was in the same position at 65 and did what was requiredrostate removal. Then I had to go through x ray treatments for cancer that ha leaked to the surrounding tissue after that.

This has been my experience:

Prostate removal: Dry firing, Possible ED
X-Ray treatment: Bowel dysfunction.

Well you had to ask. My advice? Get it done as soon as possible or risk far greater consequences.

So far I am cancer free for 3 years; I go in for my 3.5 year checkup in 2 weeks.

Tripper do you remember what your original PSA was? Was it more than 4? How many biopsies did they take and do you remember how many showed up cancer? Only one of mine did out of the 12 so the urologist thinks it's contained but says he won't know for sure until he gets in there. I'm scared I have to admit.

I really don't remember but I think it was 4-5 and my urologist asked me if I wanted to wait. I said no but i would get a second opinion if I was you or maybe even a third. It is a life altering decision.
