What is the most comfortable DOT helmet you have besides ACC? It must have 1 inch of foam protection around it to be legal in NC. I am in the market for a new helmet. Thanks guys.

That is not a true statement. The law says the helmet has to meet FMVSS218. Nowhere does it specify the thickness of the foam liner. That is the problrm with this new law no one understands it not the LEO and certinly not the consumer. To answer your question HCI 100 series are nice helmet and range in price from 30 to 100 dollars. I too live in NC and went to my DA and got a copy of the law and standard if you get a ticket because your helmet doesn't have an inch of foam it will not hold up in court.
Your very right about the misunderstanding of the law. If you go to the NC DMV web site you will see under Hot topics the helmet link and then at the bottom of that link is another link where it carries you to the 1 inch foam statement. I also had a State Trooper take a look at my helmet and he said he would ticket me. It bluntly says on the web site and the trooper read it to me in person that it must have the 1 inch of foam. It may not hold in court but you will go to court to prove it. Per the Trooper, "It is a poorly written law." "It all depends on the policeman that stops you weither you get a ticket or not." Its a bad law that leaves to many unknowns. Ride with your ACC helmet if you like but the likelyhood you will get a ticket is high per the Trooper in Asheboro NC.

I read the information in the link. Those are guidlines on how to tell the difference between dot and non dot helmets. If you read the standard FMVSS218 nowhere doest it say what material the helmet or liner have to be made of or does it say how thick the foam must be. There is also no mention of a minimum weight for a helmet. Ask your trooper friend to show you in the stsndard FMVSS218 where those things are spelled out and let me know because I have read it more than once and cant find it anywhere. I also called ACC if you call and ask them for a copy of there test data that shows their helmet complies they will gladly sendt it to you. Go to court with that and what can they say? The state has never tested a helmet the law makers who passed this law have no idea what the standard is.
I agree with everything you just stated to the HIGHEST degree. The fact still remains just as you stated there are troopers that dont know what to do because of the vagueness of the law. On that link you looked up at the NC DMV web site you saw what they are looking for. So I plan to have a back up plan at least. If I wear my ACC which I might just do that I want another DOT in my saddle bag in case one of them stop me. I have several trips planned and because of the Foam crap issue and ACC has a hard plastic shell on the inside once or if I get my ticket by a Trooper that dont have a clue I can at least continue on my journey with another helmet. Then fight the situation in court. The police are taught when in dought ticket and let the judge handle it. Boys this mess is going to get messy at least for the first 6 months. Then I expect after they had their full of fighting the general public they will make the offense one that is ticketed after a wreck.

I talked to a trooper here in Rockingham today he told me all they would be checking for was a DOT sticker and that it had more than just soft padding inside. It is real easy to tell the difference between a novelty helmet and a DOT. The cop would have to be a total moron not to know the difference. I am not going to worry too much about anymore.

Xenarchi,

Thank you for your advice on helmets. I am going to check into your suggestion. I spoke to some dealers in Asheboro while I was in SC on Saturday by phone.

ACC makes the finest helmet far as weight, low wind resistance, and less neck strain of any helmet I have owned. I planned on it being the final helmet I ever would buy. I think so much of the product that I have promoted their product to many people around the Triad area. Problem is NC doesnt know about their product and considers their design a novelty helmet because of the hard plastic shell inside. ACC is fully aware of this because I have emailed and spoke to them. I asked for their assistance with some calls or something to Raleigh.Their responce to me is cut and pasted from their email below.

NC is using the FMVSS-218 Standard as their specs. Our helmets pass all the DOT specs including labeling. There is quite a controversy going on right now as to whether or not NC can modify the Federal specs..........Advanced Carbon Composites Inc.

1-800-300-9813I am honestly trying very hard to get SOMEONES attention concerning this. The emails I have sent and calls I have made are well above 20. I am getting pissed that NC will not recognize ACC product. Could I win in court YES I think I could but do I want to go through the hassle NOPE. I ride to Rockingham, Maggie Valley, the Beaches of NC, and every where else. I travel and I dont want some policeman in the Mountains that is doing the BEST job he knows to do making the decision that the judge needs to see my helmet and he is notcapable of making this decision if it is DOT. That would force me into court.I would not be mad with the policeman at all. I understand is point. I would be pissed when I had to drive from Randleman to Maggie Vallie two times (1 to say not guilty and 2nd to fight with the court) to fight the helmet violation. Yes I am stubburn enough I would spend 500.00 to beat an offense that Idid not commitand my helmet is legal. I believe in helmets and I also believe in THEM TEACHING THE POLICE WHAT IS AND WHAT IS'NT!!! I wish they would compile a list of DOT helmets and let it be that. This new law is going to cause havic because HD doesnt even understand it. They have lawyers workingour of HD headquartersper our local dealer on what this law means. Its going to be stupid I think for the first 6 months.

My ACC has 5/8 inch of black painted foam then the soft interchangable liner. I'm going to wear mine and carry a spare in the box just in case. I like mine enough to go ahead and wear it. I think that once some time passes, this will pass also. There are enough helmets out there that are non dot that no one will want to quibble over the ACC helmet.

After trying on countless helmets at a bike show this weekend, the only helmet that made me look less like a mushroom head was the Vega xts leather. It was 75.00, so I came home and ordered one online for 50.00
I agree with Monkyman on the Vega XTS. I have the "Naked" model, which doesn't have any front snapsor visor but it does have a pair of vents on the front to help keep your head cool inhot weather. It has the same style and looks very much like a non-DOT beaniestyle half helmet. My new Vega XTS is only 1 inch wider and 3/4 inch longer than thenon-DOT half helmets. It's also super light at 25 oz, just a hair over 1.5 lbs, which is the main reason I bought it. I looked at a lot of different helmets and wrote e-mails to many companies to find out the weight of their helmets. Practically none of thecompanies selling them ever list the weightin the descriptions of the helmets on the websitesbut I wanted the lightest DOT legal helmet I could buy, besides the ACC which are way overpriced IMO. You will not find another DOT legal half helmet that weighs less than the Vega and only costs $40 - $60, depending where you buy it. It doesn'tcatch much wind or strain my neck at all while riding. I couldn't be happier with the Vega XTS and recommend this helmet to anyone looking for a new DOT legal half helmet.

Try looking at Daytona helmets. I have a legal beanie. Light weight and looks good IMO. They also make a carbon fiber jobbie which is really light. They're pretty strict where I am. Helmet has to have 1" foam, the label stitch into it with size , manufacture, and date made. It also has to have a metal D-Ring. No plastic clip. I've lost 3 novelty helmets and got tired of messing around. $115 fine.

I just have a thing against thermo plastic (Polycarbonate) helmets- trash barrels and football helmets. I want a fiber / resin helmet either kevlar, carbon, or glass. That is one of the reasons I went with Vega. Also liked the straps, size was noticably smaller then the HD or HJC(plastic) and the price.
