Cal. guys, need info on Big Sur
Living here in Pa and in May, my uncle and I are planning a trip to Las Vegas for about a week (we're flying out). We've always heard of Highway 1 and how great the sights are. So we thought about after our stay in LV, we might fly to Cal to perhaps rent some bikes and see the Big Sur. Would this be a good section of Hy 1 to see? If so, what would be a good airport to fly into and would there be a good HD dealer to rent bikes from. Lets have some help from you Cal bikers. Thanks

You might want to try Santa Barbara don't know if they rent HD's there or not, good place to start though, just stay off Hwy. 1 big sur area at night dangerous as hell, (drunk drivers) good luck

Check out Gary Bang in Atascedaro. San Luis Obispo has an airport and Gary Bung HD is about 20-25 miles North of there. Start your trip in San Luis and then travel North. Go as far as Monterey if you want then come back down 101. Another HD dealer in Salinas. Just remember that the summer months along Big Sur brings lots of foggy and coldweather even if it is hotter than hades in the valley. Be prepared!

There is Eaglerider Rentals in Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Francisco. You could fly in andride go one way to another city and fly out from there. Many flights to Las Vegas from the major cities. You would need at least one night stayover at Big Sur or San Luis Obispo area, more if you want to stop a lot. The nicest part of Highway 1 isbetween Monterey south to Morro Bay, about four hours with stops at least. (was there three times last summer... spectacular!) Spring is a good time. I got no fog just two over cast days and one unbelievble warm sunny clear day! May will be cool (60's) but less chance of fog.

save the airfare and rent bikes from Las Vegas HD. Ride from Vegas to and from California. It's a great ride. In addition Big Sur is awsome , as is 99% of HWY 1.
As a matter of fact , save your money and spend less time in Vegas and more time riding. the grand canyon is a great destination to.

You can fly into Sacramento and be half way there. We have two HD dealers in town. But I sure as hell would NOT want to be traveling the northern US1 HW this time of year! I mean hell, we just got 8' of snow in the mountains last week. You'll never make it, I am sure many of the roads are closed.

I rode that stretch from just north of MOnterey last summer around 4th of july and it was cold and foggy, couldn't see anything...went to Holister a couple days later and it was fairly warm. You never know what to expect right on the ocean weather wise..............May might be OK.
San Hose would probably be the best/ closestto get rentals.....

Work a deal to ride Hwy 1between Oakland HD(Bob Dron) and Santa Barbara HDone way. Both rent and cheap flights into or out of Oakland. SB flights notas cheap but what a great 2 day ride.

I'll second that

This is the best bet. It's a loop and you will see some really nice country, avoiding heavy freeway and city traffic. Be sure to stop in Cambria, and a little further north at Hearst Castle.
