Default speedometer/tach

I went to install speedo/tach on 1998 wideglide. Bike perwired to just plug and play with just tach lead to install. Found tach wire and installed. Tach works but speedo doesn't. Checked wiring three times. Wires appear to be right. Went to install old speedo back to check it. No speedo reading. Have power--lights--correct odometer reading but no speedo and odometer doesn't change. I have continuity from speedo to speed sending unit. I have no voltage from speedo to sending unit. Old speedo doesn't work--new speedo/ tach unit doesn't work. Tach works but speedometer doesn't.Suggestions?

I would guess for some reason your sending unit is shot ,it happened to my 1998 softtail with no warning just quit (fun thing sitting in front of a harley dealer) so went in the store and bought a new one took there tools to my bike and switched it and worked great for as long as I owned the bike. Hope this might help you.

Sorry, nope. I installed the speedo/tach on an 04 DWG and 06 Heritage. Both plug n play, worked without a hitch - but I didn't need to install the tach lead. Weird that your tach works when that was your only hook-up, and the pre-wired half doesn't. Hope someone can help out. First post - welcome to the forum.

Agree with sqdeal. Clean it first - KISS - if no success, then R & R sending unit. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. I replaced speed sensor. Now speedometer works.Sensor must have went bad while I was in the middle of change out.

Should have used a GPS for the speed, and you could have kept the mileage down on your bike, definitely would have helped with the resale value. I took a vow to give up smiley faces.
