We have a salesman at Bumpus HD in Jackson TN. that rides with us from time to time but if you're interested in that line of work be prepaired to give up most of your weekend riding.

I have worked in Harley sales and it gave some great insight into buying bikes and what really goes on in the Harley world. This differs from dealer to dealer. It is not a high pressure job with them pushing you to make sales, if you don't sell however you don't make any money. I make 50 dollars a day and then a comission. If you are good you can make in a crap load, best sales guy was making 50,000+ a year. You do get some free stuff and parts were 10% over cost. We also get free rentals of anybike. One thing I did learn however is this. As much as some people complain about Sales guys and dealerships. You have to cut them some slack we deal with a lot of stupid people. Guys and Gals who come in wanting an Ultra and then when it comes time to pay they don't want to put any money down and then wonder why there payments will be 500 dollars a month. Overall though not a bad job if you like sales.

According the the salesman who sold my bike to me it's the easiest job in the world. He said he didn't have to do anything, Harley's sell themselves. He was right. He didn't even have to remember my name or phone number after I left the showroom.

I have a friend that works sales in one of our larger metro Atlanta dealers. He makes $200 per bike, and an additional $50 if he sells an extended warranty. He made $38k last year and worked as many hours as he could. Customer contact and follow-up are the keys. He rarely gets to ride on the weekends, as Saturdays and Sundays are important days to be in the dealership. In order to make a living, you've got tobe at the dealership as many hours as possible and work the phones constantly. The dealership provides him with decent benefits (group health, 401k, vacation, holidays) and supports him with good leads and working environment. But the guy rarely gets to go on a group ride and uses his bike mostly for commuting.

So basically what you guys are saying is get the wife to take a job at Harley in sales so you can get the nice discounts, and still keep all your riding time...[sm=biker2.gif]

I work a local dearlership and could help
1 How much canyou make .very low hourley and commision each dearlership is different but the one i work at has a 15 bike per month requirement for full draw.
2 What kind of hours do you work in a week. 40 plus and yes always on saturday and sunday
3 Is it a high pressure sales job like cars salesor a laid back relaxing kinda mellow kinda job.
yes high pressure to sell, sell, sell but it is pretty cool to work around harleys all day
4 Do you get much of a discount on buying a new bike.no MSRP
5 Any kind of company benefits Yes, medical/dental/401K
6 Do you get a free T-Shirt every week. no but 10% below there cost around 12 dollors a shirt
If you like bs'ing with people and dont mind the same 10 guys that come in every saturday to bitch it is cool and the MILFS that come in to buy stuff is pretty nice also. The average guy or gal that comes in to buy is from down the street working hard but wants to ride on the weekend because they are sick of working all the time and not having a little fun.

Thanks allfor the info.

Sounds pretty dealer specific on how the pay and commission setup is. I would guess the bigger the building the more "pressure" to sell bikes (to help pay for the overhead).

Fixing to retire from the military and DMV counter person and Walmart greeter is on the top of the list of laid back jobs to get but it always seemed that the HD Sales folks were pretty mellow folks to.
