Default Register a custom in Florida

Who know having a project bike could be such a pain in the butt? I have an old Harley frame that was given to me but there is no documentation on the frame. I bought a RevTech six speed transmission and a new 99 Evo motor. I bought alot of other parts and started mocking the bike up. Ran out of time, energy, and money and decided to sell the project. I got a buyer who bought it for $6,000. Essentially, I'm only getting about half the money back that I have tied up in the project. He can't keep the bike because he called the DMV and they said that with the unmatching numbers, they will confiscate the bike. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? BTW- The bike is back in my possesion. Is anybody interested in the whole shebang or maybe just parts?

In my state , I believe you could title your bike but might have to do it asa salvage title. I know nothing about Fla. regarding their motor vechicle laws. Call the police and ask.
Good Luck!

Ran into a similar situation with my old Ironhead. It was abandoned on our property when I was a teen and we had to do some serious research to make sure it wasn't stolen. The frame didn't match the engine. We had to do research with the MOCO (find out what the frame and engine numbers were -- found out it was a replacement engine).

Whenever you get an old frame or engine you have to make sure it's got the proper paperwork, or at least you have to trace it to find out why it doesn't have it's proper match. There's always a rash of stolen bikes that are parted out, sold as frame or engine separately, etc. That frame could have come from anything and may be completely useless.

I would get a frame from Poughco or somebody and look into registering it as a new custom. Or do like you are saying, cut your losses and sell the parts.

t_m34- Appreciate the advice. Thought about buying a bobber frame and building a bobber style bike as my tastes have changed and I like those allot better than what I started out building. But, then, everything needs to be sold and re-bought. (handlebars, fenders, forks, etc....) Did you guys know that bikes are moneypits?

You may always count on the government for grabbing whatever you own unless you can prove they can't do it.

I actually want to just get out from under it. The other frame and whatnot would or couldbe an option, but, I think it would be better to just get out from under it. May part it out if nobody shows any interest...

First of all matt ,thats a old custom frame didnt have numbers came with certificate of origin. get receipts for everything, take a trip down to state cop shop and tell em what u want to do,or maybe dmv not sure about fla. state cops know what hoops to jump through.fla is to complicated check ala. might be easier.
