Actually inch pounds and foot pounds are not directly related.

Inch pounds are what you get around your waist as you get older. Each inch is about 5 pounds.

Foot pounds is what you do with your feet (pound your foot) when your strip out a nut from over torqueing it.

This is the (free) conversionsoftware I use. Check it out at http://joshmadison.com/software/convert/. It covers about any type conversion you will need to do.

1" lb = 0.1129848 Nm
12" lb = 1.355817 Nm
I use that a lot and it's free. Easy download here:

Sowhat would that be in N.m? [sm=joke.gif]
Just convert to Kg/m and then multiply by 9,81 or, if you are not too squeamish, by 10.

Thanks. Kinda makes me feel like an idiot that I didn't really think to look up, or google, conversion. I am showing my age I guess, or my ignorance.

Thanks again

keep in mind too, that if you put any extension on the torque wrench that 'lengthens' the torque arm, your amount of torque will change, causing over torque. same could happen if you use those socket wrenches some people call "dogbones" or "crows foot" at a different than 90° angle.

somebody slap me... i'm starting to geek...

Torque can be measured in any units that you want. Torque equals force x distance...no matter what increments or units of measure you want to use. If you put 1 pound of force on a 12" lever, you get one foot pound or 12 inch pounds. If you put 2 pounds of force on a 6" lever, you still get one foot pound. One foot pound could be stated as 192 ounce inches. Simple...they put the increments on the tools that make the most sense. If you need something that exceeds the capacity of the wrench, get a bigger one.
