For some reason all my pictures are gone from posts or replaced with the dreaded red X.
What gives?

Most likey your photo host was down. When that happens all pics hosted there will will appear as red x's.

I can see the pictures and attachments, so I guess all is well on my end.

A photo host is the place where you store your pictures...then you link them to here. Photobucket, imageshack, etc.
