RE: Wheelies in Florida....pay the man.
Living in S. FL, the only thing I see wrong with the law, is that if should be applied to high performance sports cars as well. These Aholes give us all a bad rep.

Just high performance sports cars?
How about ANY vehicle....if you are gonan start singling out vehicles...
Also....I still think driving drunk is a WAY worse offense than any wheelie or speed infraction...
One more thing..I should write the guy who is penning this law..and ask him this question..unless someone in his district would...
Ask him who has caused more deaths to people other than the operater in questionon the road.
Drunk driver or mr wheelie man....?

i got the same form letter from above as a response to my email also.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding HB 137, Offenses Committed While Operating a Motorcycle. I realize some riders have several concerns regarding my legislation. This bill aims to address riders of high performance motorcycles that treat Florida's roads and highways as their own personal stunt track. I am sure you can agree that popping wheelies at high rates of speeds or any other kind of stunt riding has no place on Florida's roads. That is the type of reckless driving this bill seeks to address. The goal of this legislation is to target stunt riding and prevent motorcycle fatalities.
Currently, it seems HB 137 has been drafted in a way that would affect all motorcycle riders. I feel that the poor actions of a few riders should not punish all riders. Subsequently, I am currently working on language that will amend the bill to clearly address the problem of motorcycle stunt riding on public roads. The amendment will clearly define what is considered stunt riding and require a motorcycle rider to maintain two wheels on the ground at all times. The speeding focuses of the bill will not stand alone but will rather be in conjunction with stunt driving.
Thank you for expressing your concerns. They will definitely be taken into consideration. I am open to meeting with any person or group to discuss amendments to the bill. I believe that part of the process of creating a great law is being open to the ideas of others.
If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Sincerely,
Carlos Lopez-Cantera

RE: Wheelies in Florida....pay the man.
the tv had a special segment on Nov. 26,2007 ??
the rerun was availaible on the NBC.net the following day.
the report did leave a very sour taste towards motorcyclist.
unfortunately the non-riding public does not see a difference between between classes of motorcycles.
when they hear "MOTORCYCLE" the first thing that comes to their mind is the individual doing 100+mph on one wheel.

RE: Wheelies in Florida....pay the man.
With a draconian punishment like that I wouldnt stop for the cops either. The punishment would be insignificantly different to try and outrun the police so why not go for it (easy to do most of the time as they're forbidden to chase a m/c for a mere traffic violation in many jurisdictions).

I wrote the representtive from Miami that introduced this bill and below is his reply. He replied to me 10 Oct 07, but there has been no change in the way the bill is written. I suggest everyone read the bill from Carlos Lopez-Cantera
Florida State Representative, District 113 (part of Miami).I suggesteveryone write him to let him know the bill needs to be re-written to not single out every motorcyclist. Damndrunk driving or dui doesn't get this much punishment in the state of Florida or anywhere else.
If this bill passes, it could make it to your community/state. If by some chance you get caught speeding down the road over the limit in this bill, you can loose your bike (taken by the state of Florida & loose your bike privlages for years). This is an unfair bill singling out ALL motorcyclist.

Thank you for expressing your concerns. They will definitely be taken into consideration. I recently met with James Reichenbach from ABATE, and after I explained the true intent of this legislation he told me that he would support it.
