I used to wear my helmet occasionally alone, but with my son all the time. I had the misfortune of getting wiped out by one of those cagers. Totalled bike, broke my back, lacerations to the head from hitting a pole. Of course my helmet was unscathed inside my saddle bag. Granted I was lucky for the most part, still walking and talking, when new bike comes in the spring I will be wearing the helmet. Though I am not a "*****" I don't want to use up all those nine lives just yet.

All in all it's a free world and if the law permits it's your choice.

Living in Oregon, I always wear a helmet, it's the law. But that is not why I wear one. I started riding dirt bikes and got used to it. So, it just feels right!

Helmets are like windshields to me -- can't see being without one.

No choice here.

I'm planning on renting a Harley when I'm in California next month. I'll go lidless to at least try it out.

Cheers!

Really? I thought Cali didn't have a lid law... oh well... What about Nevada?

Cheers!

I guess it's like anywhere else... Some of us don't and some of us do. I always wear one when I ride in the dirt, but seldom to never on the street. I might on the street too if I could find one half as comfortable as my dirt bike helmet, but I have never been able to find a street one that doesn't cut off the circulation to my forehead after 10 minutes. My dirt helmet is a Shoei, but Shoei's street bike helmets aren't made the same inside. I've tried many brands and maybe I've got an odd head but none were tolerable for any length of time. I'd think I was a freak if the dirt helmet didn't fit so well.

Thanks for all the input guys. I can see there's definitely a law bias at work, and since Indiana doesn't require them that would explain why I seldom see Harley people wearing them. Based on anecdotal evidence, I'd say most won't wear one unless the law says they have to...(or they have personal experience with some sort of horrendous crash).

Anyone else have an odd head and have found the perfect fitting helmet?

As Kalifornia goes so goes Nevada. Yer outta luck there too. Ya gotta get to Arizona or Utah to go lidless.

In Illinois there is no helmet law at all, for anybody. Lisa and I rarely wear one. I have a full face helmet for early spring and late fall to keep the cold air off my "bald head" and out of my eyes but the rest of the time I go lidless. It's my choice and I've fought to keep a helmet law out of this state. Many states have some sort of helmet law (under 18 or for the 1st year that you acquire you MC license). You have to check each state when you are riding. Alot of states have dropped the law recently. Kentucky lost theirs and I think West Virginia was going to reapeal their's also.
