Everyone should make their own helmet decisions. I firmly believe that choice is part of nature's plan...it's called Natural Selection, and we shouldn't mess with it. The herd needs thinning somehow.

Wouldn't it be more productive (rather than getting into yet another pissing match over how stupid people are who chose not to wear helmets) to focus on the apparent fact that SUB-STANDARD andFAILED Helmetsare being SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AS DOT COMPLIANT, WHEN THEY'RE NOT?

But no, much better to just ignore a major freakingproblem and instead pour derision on helmetless riders, rather than acknowledge that you're being ripped off. It's not about whether a quality helmet will protect your head or not, it's about the potential for being injuredbecause the (supposedly quality) helmet you bought and wore was a cheap piece of non-compliant junk and it was sold to you anyway.

ORIGINAL: TUNDRA_schumacher

Here's something to think on (and I'm sure this will start amess [8D])
I've been in a few wrecks...mostly my own fault...but anywho... I suffered my worse head injuries while wearing a helmet. Was an Arthur Fulmer fullface. When I landed, the strap anchor inside the helmetfailed, and I ended up landing forehead first (helmetless)in some ratherlarge gravel. I still have the scars.
Go figure, eh.

Ummmm....sounds to me like you suffered the injury to your forehead because you WEREN'T wearing a helmet--at least not when you hit the gravel. Glad you made it OK, but if I were on the fence about the issue (I'm not) your story would convince me to wear a helmet, just with a better retention system.

Agreed laz, but I was wearing one when the accident started. The initial impact it what caused it to fail, and it was only about 1 year old.
madelf makes a very good point in his post.

This one again?Common sense should prevail....but never does. You have a better chance of surviving a gunshot to the chest with a kevlar vest on than without one.You have a better chance of survivng a car accident if your'e wearing a seatbelt than if your'e not.You have a better chance of surviving a motorcycle wreck with a helmet on, it's just that simple.Just because Joe-****'s old roomies neighbors dad's brother in law died with a helmet on doesn't make them useless.I laid down in May with a $50.00 skid-lid and the pavement tore the paint off the lid, not my forehead.
