Actually from a design standpoint, using both carbon fiber and kevlar are extremely sensible. The carbon fiber will strengthen the shell to protect from penetrative injuries - you need extremely high tensile strength in a material to do so, something which a lot of plastic compounds aren't as good at, at least not without having to make them extremely heavy - something which can seriously compromise comfort. The Kevlar, with its energy dispersal properties, help transmit the force of impact all over the shell, and the more which can be dissapated the less can be transmitted.
The safety of helmets is one of those discussions that can go around in circles. If you only cared about safety, you'd walk around with a huge full face on. Of course comfort is also an issue, and if you find a thinner lighter helmet more comfortable, then at least it will provide you will some form of protection, which is IMO, better than going without.
I'm on the fence about the NEXL helmet. On one hand I really want one, on the other, I've gone from wearing a full face in the UK (where it rains all the time) and I was riding a 'non-bike'. To riding a Harley with a shorty helmet. Shorty because its a Harley, and I'm RUB'y enough to care how I look, and also because in S. Louisiana, its way too hot to wear a full face about 90% of the time. My shorty is still quite big, (envision a biker wearing a giant portabella...) and every time I try a smaller style on, I feel totally naked! No one near me carries the NEXL so I'm hoping I can get to a rally this year to try one on or something.
I do have a full face (modular) as well, for touring/rain/warmth, its incredibly comfy, but thats probably because its huge (the shell) with padding to make it fit my small head. No wonder its comfy. And warm....

RE: Carbon Fiber Helmet owners
I've been wearing helmets from "Head Trip" (carbonfiberhelmets.com) for several years. I'm happy to say that I've not been in a serious accident... and I suppose that in that case I'd be a gonner. Anyway, these helmets are sort of a compromise between DOT helms and novelty helmets. The carbon fiber gives me some measure of protection, but lacks the shock absorbsion of the DOT.
As for the NexL helmet... I've tried them on and found them uncomfortable.

my carbonfiberhelmets is a novelty helmet.. they also make DOT style helmets now.. Anyway - yeah, it's smaller than the NexL helmet - lighter too.
DOT or non-DOT is pure rider preference. My opinion is the gov. should butt out of our business regarding whether or not we wear helmets, and what type we wear if we do.
