bad knees
how many of you guys have bad knees
i screwed up both knees in a soccer game about 6 yrs ago, playing with some much younger and more talented guys.
had one scoped, both still give me trouble.
take glucosamine (sp?), exercise does help as it makes the supporting muscles stronger, use a rub, even some xtra support
but there are still times when just the right uneven ground, or bad stop, funky twist, will send heated ice picks at my knees
just waiting for that one where the knee just won't hold up and down we go.
anybody else?

RE: bad knees
I am in physical therapy right now for my knees and I wear a brace on one. It doesn't stop me from doing anything but it does slow me down a little in the winter. They have to warm up a bit before I get going when its cold out. I need to move to Florida!

RE: bad knees
Over the last 30 years I have had my left knee repaired 4 times and my right knee 8 times to varying degrees. I am currently waiting to have my right knee replaced (ouch) but most of the specialists here don't like doing this operation on people under 60 I am currently 50. I was on the wait list 4 years ago but I chickened out when my name came up then but I won't this time around. Most of my problems arose from being quite active in sports, I played football, hockey, golf, softball, tennis and just about any thing else I could think of. My doctor had warned me in my early 20's that if I kept playing I would be walking with a cane in my 40's... well he wasn't that far off on his prediction.
Oh to be young and so invincible ......when I thought that it would never happen to me and recovery at 20 seemed to be not that bad....now I am paying the price, I can walk up stairs but not down, I can walk with a slight limp but it can be very painful, I couldn't even run 3 step if my life depended on it and I haven't been able to squat down to line up a putt in golf for 25 years.
Take care of yourself because you will have to pay the piper (Arthritis) at some point down the line.

RE: bad knees
left leg was pretty much destroyed in a moto x crash 10 years ago so know what you mean always afraid to put right leg in the wrong spot but the bright side is because of it I have handicap plate on the bike so I do get prefered parking.. I always look around and see people with worse and I am still able to ride..

RE: bad knees
I've had 6 knee surgeries, 2 right, 4 left. The last one on the left was a total knee. I'm 52. When the pain interfers with you quality of life, it's time to replace it. But beware. Ask as many questions as you can think of. Rehab is longer than they'll tell you. I had mine in February and I still feel the effects. Many complications can arise, including a blood clot like I got. If you've had previous surgeries, your range of motion won't be as good. The pain will be gone though! It's tougher than they tell you.[sm=trust_me.gif] But, here's the good news, I've been back on the bike for several months. Got an extended shifter and highway pegs. They helped. Good luck.

RE: bad knees
Had left knee reconstructive surgery in 1977 { totally blown out } and at the time I was 27 yrs. old. After 2 casts,2 manipulation surgerys, 6+ months of PT { worse than the injury , LOL ! }and losing 11 months of work I was / am back to approx. 95 % of my old self, in my opinion ? That was 30 yrs. ago .
FAST FORWARD ...... Two weeks ago at age 57 I had a total replacement of the right knee. I have been doing the PT { physical therapy} at home after 4 days in the hospital, and will begin the REAL P.T. { out patient } on Tuesday 10/6/07. Yes, I still think its as bad or worse than the injury itself , but it HAS to be done. The end result { use & condition }of the joint is in your hands ~ the harder ya work it, the better off you'll be in the end !! My advice is if you need some type of surgery, a joint or partial joint replacement, do it while your young, everything gets harder as you get older , trust me I know for a fact ! PS : Ortho doctor said if all continues to go as it has so far, I should be back to work ~and riding ~by Dec. 1st. { A total of about 6 weeks , start to finish } Good luck with whatever you decide to do !! RE: bad knees
No real problems. Played full tackle on the Marine Corps teams until age 39 then just the intra-mural flag football at Quantico fora couple more years. Still run several miles a week, but at 6'4" and 270lbs, I'm not as fast as I used to be.

RE: bad knees
me too . . .
4 surgeries so far, thin film of cartilidge left. Torn ligaments and tendons, bone frags, a friggen mess . Left overs from highschool ball - but stuff I'd do all over again.
And yeah it hurts sometimes - but so what? it's only pain.
