I see riders with their left hand on their left hip all the time. I've tried it & it makes my back hurt pretty quick. For me, it's both hands or no hands, like this:
I've actually done this for as much as 50 miles at a time in Texas. That pic was taken at about 75 mph while it was 35*F! If I need to drift right, I stick my right knee out into the wind etc.

To answer your question, yes I'll occasionally take my left hand off the grip.

Most of the other time I just ride down the road in the "Jesus Christ Pose" or (for the religous fanatics that are offended) I do the "Scott Stapp from Creed" pose.[8D]

Consistently only one hand.. realized the other day that I was doing a 'michael jackson like crotch hold.. don't know why..
