Default Axle Lube

Is it necessary to put anti-seize lubricant on the axle when I put the wheel back on the bike? The axle seems pretty dry, but it's clean.

By leaving the lube off the axle I guarantee you'll go 20,000 miles on your rear tire. Anti-sieze causes tire wear. Don't ask me how, 'cause I think it's magic.

Of course, after that 20k miles, when you go to get the new tire put on, the axle will be rust-welded to the bearings, and the hub will get ruined trying to get 'em apart.

I always have used some type of anti-sieze because I did ruin a good wheel way back when I was a young pup.

I replaced my rear tire today, and the folks at NAPA gave me high temp grease (multipurpose) 400F I believe...is this OK?

I never liked using grease as some types tend to harden over time, and some types sorta liquify and run. The anti-sieze doesn't do either of these.

Mac,

You can get Anti-sieze at any auto parts or hardware store.

I have used gallons of it. When I was working maintainance at one of our plants I had a boss that insisted on anti-sieze on ever thing that had threads.

Regards,

Bill

When I saw the name of this thread I thought you were talking about KY Lube??? Never knew it as Anti Seize, but I guess you could call it that.....
