By leaving the lube off the axle I guarantee you'll go 20,000 miles on your rear tire. Anti-sieze causes tire wear. Don't ask me how, 'cause I think it's magic.
Of course, after that 20k miles, when you go to get the new tire put on, the axle will be rust-welded to the bearings, and the hub will get ruined trying to get 'em apart.
I always have used some type of anti-sieze because I did ruin a good wheel way back when I was a young pup.

Mac,
You can get Anti-sieze at any auto parts or hardware store.
I have used gallons of it. When I was working maintainance at one of our plants I had a boss that insisted on anti-sieze on ever thing that had threads.
