Why do most HD riders scoff at helmets?

Ride to TX, OK, KS, SD, CO, WY.You will find that the majority of HD riders in those states do not wear helmets.

It would be helpful to note that the majority of Harley owners no doubt do wear helmets and other safety gear, and are unaware that this forum even exists. Don't confuse the chest-thumping here for anything like a majority opinion.

In IL I wouldthink it is about9 non-helmeted HD riders to every 1 helmet. Of course that is just a guess on my part and this is one of the few States with zero helmet laws.
I wear a helmet not because I have to but because I choose to and everybody should have that choice. This is like gun control, (I am very pro-gun) you are not going to change someones mind.
It amazes me how some people get all wrapped up in what other people do. This is not to the original poster but why do people care if another does not have a helmet on? If you feel safer with a helmet then by all means wear one, if you feel safer with a full face then by all means go with as much protection as you can get but don't criticize others for their choice.

I don't think the majority of Harley riders scoff at helmets. They scoff at the fact that some nanny state bureaucrats who have never been on a motorcycle are taking away their freedom of choice. I wear a helmet because it is a law in NC, but ifI ride 3 miles from my house, I am in SC where there is no helmet law and I could remove it. I choose tocontinue to wear mine, but I won't pass judgement on those that don't.

As far as the "majority," I have no clue. But I will tell you that I rarely see people wearing them around here.

The tide is turning for several reasons
1.FOR THOSE WHO ARE CONCERNED WITH THE "C00L" FACTOR I noticed this last weekend during the vibrations event in Reno that almost half of the HAs there were wearing full face helmets. There is a certain % of riders who try to emulate the patch holders and if they can wear full face, then so can those who look up to them
2. COMFORT ISSUES.....Today, Full face helmets are made with better, lighter materials than years ago. Also with the advent of flip up, also known as modular helmets, there is more ease to wearing some of these helmets.
I still believe to let those who ride, decide.

The last time I saw a bunch of Angles stop for gas in Carson City they were heading back to the Bay Area from Sturgis. IIRC none of them had full face lids or windshields, 99% + on Rat FXRs and they used about agallon of sunscreen between them before taking off. Doesn't surprise me they are going to fullface lids for the road though!

Wear a helmet, don't wear a helmet. Ride a Harley, ride a Honda. It's a choice and I really don't put much thought into what others wish to do. The guys I ride with have Hondas and Harleys and some wear a helmet and some don't. We each respect each other's thoughts and opinions and never discuss it. To each his own!
