Residents want leaf blowers to buzz off

NEWTON, Mass., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- City officials in a Massachusetts town are considering whether to silence the drone of leaf blowers that some residents say rob them of their quiet.

"I hate them," Lynne Bail of West Newton, Mass., told the Boston Globe. "They go all day long. It really spoils the neighborhood and the peace and quiet we used to have."

Aldermen are in a quandary: Leaf blowers seem to be a prerequisite to achieving a well manicured lawn efficiently, but critics say the blowers are a nuisance, robbing neighborhoods of quiet and could be damaging to eardrums.

If Newton votes to outlaw gas-powered leaf blowers, it would join several other communities around Boston considering leaf blower restrictions.

If approved it would be unlawful for any person -- even a city employee -- to operate a portable gasoline-powered leaf blower in the city. Electric leaf blowers are excluded.

"The exhaust is just tremendous," said Newton Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan, who represents the area. "One constituent said his smoke alarm goes off, it's that thick."

How does Hess-Mahan maintain his yard?

"I have children," he said.

It doesn't seem difficult to see which way the pendulum is swinging when it comes to excessive noises.

Unless the cop is carrying a db meter these laws are pretty hard to enforce. Just plead not guilty and I bet the charges would be dropped

If they make gas driven leaf blowers against the law I don't see how a plea of not guilty would do you any good, especialy if you were using one!!!!!!!

I worked in Newton for 27 LONG years.... They are probably the most affluent commuity in Mass. They are with out a doubt the most pompass group you would ever deal with. I wanted to put up some fencing aound the Hospital I worked at and had to get the town "Fence Seeier" to come and check it out. Now I was a real criminal, I wanted to go from 6' to 8' for astetic reasons. All that will happen is the grounds guys that work in the city will get small generator sets and run the electric leaf blowers off of them.. To give you and idea of the community....the are 9 miles west of Boston. A house there starts at no less the 600k and that wound be a shack...they go up the 5 to maybe 8 mill on the high end.

As long as they keep sending Barney Frank back to congress they'll still have the most powerful "blower" around and I don't think he's quiet about it either!

A law like that would never pass in California.
