Time for my third poll. For the past two weeks, riding back from the same restaurant, I got crosswinded.Steady winds arefine but the gusts hit up to 40 mph on one of those rides. It got me to thinking what the best way is to handle the gusts.

 

Gusts are no time to make changes...relax your grip, try to stay smooth and countersteer to control bike position.

Sometimes, ya just pucker and trust the bike.

 

Well, I did leave a few teeth marks in the saddle.

 

Crosswinds and gusts really don't pose much of an issue on my RG. Jest relax and keep a going on down the road.

 

I'd be interested in knowing when you don't countersteer?????????

 

Crosswinds can become severe enough to be a serious concern. I recall back in the late '80s a couple in San Diego was killed because of crosswinds while riding their Goldwing.

Trust your instincts. Stop if and when you think it is appropriate.

 

I happened to be riding just today where the winds were pretty high. Down through the canyons we got crosswinds that hit us like a freight train. The Ultra does pretty good, but y'know, I've been riding long enough to know that leaning into the wind is the safe thing to do and be ready to straighten up when it quits. If control becomes a problem, then slow it down some, because your forward speed adds to the effect of the wind.

 

I lean into it. In fact, one time on the plains of Wyoming, the crosswind was so bad I was leaning right in order to stay on the road which was curving left. No lie.

last year the first polar bear ride of the year was to cape may nj. we were buffeted with 50 mph cross winds all the way down the parkway.my strategy was to more to the right tire track,and not to over react or correct when being blown in the left tire track or lane.slowing down helps but when your on a major highway that can be dangerous.
