Default RE: Extended warranty..... should i or shouldnt i ?

Just had the rear tail light parts replaced along with the master cylinder for the front brakes done under warranty. Have had the handle bars replaced under the factory recall.
Just remember if you work on yer bike you can't expect the dealer to warranty what somebody else did.
I have a extended 5 yr warranty and I found a dealership in the country that has treated me pretty good and I like their mechanics. I have aftermarket pipes, tuner and a 103 motor.
I don't understand why so many folks bought a Harley if they hate the dealerships so much. The dealerships are in business to make money. Not friends. I understand what is going on and I also use Indy shops to save a few bucks. I didn't buy a Harley to work on it all the time myself. I want to ride with I have free time.
They are just like taking yer car to the dealerships. Some dealerships you like and some you don't. They ain't any free rides in the world.

If you have the extra money I would buy it. If you don't just put the money in the bank cause sooner or later yer gonna need it.

Some good advice so far. I agree that if you've owned the bike since new and had no problems (and put a reasonable amount of miles on it) that you should be in good shape. If you think you might need the warranty, put that $1800 in an interest-bearing account and set it aside for bike repairs. At the end of the 5 years you'll likely have plenty of that money left, which of course is not true if you buy and don't need the warranty.
With that said, I'm not against warranties. It's possible that it pays for itself in the event of just one major repair. But like others have said, it's a wager and you have to weigh the odds and what it's worth to you.

My buddy has 45K miles on his 2005 Road King Classic. He has he 5 year extended warranty. He was just out of the 2 year warranty when the starter went out. Then the starter button switch needed to be replaced. Now it looks like the on/run switch needs to be replaced. It doesn't always make contact when switched on. He has gotten about $1000 warranty work done now and has most of the 5 years of warranty to go. If he keeps piling the miles on, I am sure he will get his money back. I think if you are riding like he is (just retired, too) the warranty might make sense. If you are putting 5K or less on a year, probably not worth it. Oh yeah, he doesn't know how to do any mechanical work. So for him, it makes sense.

If your really want it get it but try to negotiate the price of it tell them youll take it for 1100. I used to know cost on the warranties but that was almost two years ago but at that price it should be a win win for you and the dealer. its one thing that can benifit both also call around to other dealer theirs probally someone who would want to make a couple hundred bucks for a couples of miniutes time. good luck

The 2 year factory warranty on my Heritage is going to run out in about 2 weeks. the dealership called me today to see if im interested in extending it for up to 5 more years. I declined the warranty when i bought the bike. should i , or shouldnt i get it ? the bikes had 0 problems so far... but ya never know.
by the way... 5 more years is $ 1749 [:-]

I just bought 3 years. My Low Rider's warranty expired on Sept 7th.

If you sell it before the warranty is up. Your out.

Not true. You can transfer the warranty to a new, private buyer, giving your bike a higher resale value, or sell it to a new private buyer, or receive a pro-rata refund .

It's a bit of a crapshoot. The odds are that you'll never use it enough to offset the cost, BUT, if the peace of mind is worth, then go for it.

For me, I got the better end of the deal - bought the extra 5 years when i bought my bike, and got a lowered interest rate on my financing, where I save almost as much in interest as the warantee cost. So for me it was essentially free. Plus, my starter bit the dust and took out the ring gear on the clutch basket, and because I have the extended warantee it cost me 58 bucks instead of around a grand.

Cheers!
