Vanson's are made out of HARD leather to protect you. Been down in them, and I swear by them. Not at all concerned about what the jackets look like, but after all kinds of scrapes... glass, nails, rocks, bottles, pieces of cars, pavement, the Vanson's I have owned have stopped all of it. They also hold up to wet, can be layered to keep you warm... I like Bates and Schott as well, just more partial the Vanson. Did not know that the company was headed toward Chapter 11. Sad... cool story to the company. Have not had a chance to check out Fox Creek, but continue to hear good things about them.

I have seen lots of HD stuff that is way soft in my opinion. Looks broken in and is comfortable for casual wear, but I can't see it saving your hide. But my opinion is just my opinion.
